Hyundai Motor introduces Intrado
The official presentation of the Intrado will be at the Geneva Motor Show starting Tuesday.
As its code name “HED-9” suggests, Intrado is the ninth concept car developed by Hyundai Motor’s European R&D center in Russelsheim, Germany, in association with Namyang R&D Center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi.
It is the first Hyundai concept under the direction of Peter Schreyer, who became president and chief design officer of Hyundai Motor Group last year.
“Effortless and sensual, Intrado reflects the open-mindedness and constant renewal of the Hyundai brand,” Schreyer said in a statement. “It also shows that Hyundai wants its customers to rediscover the joy and freedom that should be associated with personal mobility. That’s why this car has such purity of purpose - it’s logical, lovable and livable.”
Hyundai said the name Intrado was taken from the underside of an aircraft wing that produces lift.
Intrado is the first Hyundai concept car inspired by Fluidic Sculpture 2.0, the latest Hyundai design philosophy that drove the style of the second-generation Genesis sedan.
Hyundai said the vehicle’s exterior was designed to be aerodynamically efficient, “free of unnecessary adornments and featuring minimal detailing.”
“The exterior is defined by a simple yet sporty profile that displays the latest interpretation of fluidic sculpture, while the interior shows how minimal ornamentation will perfectly fit into the varied lifestyles of the Millennial generation,” said Thomas Burkle, chief designer at Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center,
Hyundai said the Intrado has a super-light structure and a body panel made of lightweight steel, while its central carbon frame is constructed with “new, patent-pending manufacturing and joining techniques.”
Industry insiders expect Intrado could be the next generation of Hyundai’s Tucson ix35 fuel cell vehicle. Hyundai said Intrado has an upgraded hydrogen fuel-cell power train equipped with a 36 kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery. It can be refueled in just a few minutes and has a range of 600 kilometers (372 miles), according to Hyundai.
