Samsung Electronics said it will ditch its partnership with Google and take a new path into the smart home market with Tizen, the platform it developed with Intel and NTT DoCoMo.

Hong Won-pyo, president of Samsung Electronics’ Media Solutions Center, the software developer of the electronics giant, announced its plan at a press briefing Friday after the opening of the Samsung Innovation Museum.

“Samsung Electronics has pursued multiple operating systems for our mobile devices,” Hong said. “For the smart home business, our independently developed Tizen can be the basic foundation.”

Taking its own route is part of the company’s strategy to become a leader in the smart home market, adding to existing hardware for smart home services.

He added that Samsung will soon release an open-source platform for smart home services, which will be compatible with non-Samsung products.

Hong, who also is president of the Korea Association of Smart Home, predicted the industry will change rapidly in the next few years.

“Within two to three years, every home will enjoy the benefit of smart home services just like how smartphones and smart TVs are part of people’s daily lives,” he said.

Samsung’s smart home system is compatible with any smartphone operating on Android 4.0 and higher versions.

The company will incorporate its Tizen-based wearable devices - Gear 2 and Gear Fit - into the system this month.
