LG Chem operating energy storage system in California

LG Chem, Korea’s largest chemical company, said yesterday it has started operating a 32 megawatt-hour energy storage system (ESS) in Tehachapi, California.

In May 2013, Southern California Edison, California’s largest electricity company, selected LG Chem to deliver North America’s largest ESS for the Tehachapi Energy Storage Project, led by SCE and the Department of Energy as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The affiliate of LG Group said a 32 megawatt-hour capacity is enough to power 100 households in the region for over a month. The ESS here will store wind-generated energy in lithium-ion batteries.

LG Chem said the project demonstrated its ability to conduct engineering and designing of ESS.
