KBO adds a wild card in postseason reshuffle

The Korea Baseball Organization will add a wild-card team to its postseason playoffs starting next year.

Under the plan approved by the KBO board of directors, the fifth-place team in the final regular season will play the fourth-place team. While the wild-card team must win two games to advance to the first round, the fourth-place team only needs to win or draw one game.

Currently, the postseason consists of best-of-five first and second rounds and the best-of-seven Korean Series.

The board previously decided to hold the wild-card showdown only if the fourth-place team is a game and a half or less ahead of the fifth-place team.

“Some directors insisted on not holding the wild card games if the fourth team was three and half games ahead, but we decided to hold it regardless of the result to prevent possible fixed matches between leading teams and the fifth team,” said an official of the KBO.
