Smart city, innovative growth

The smart city that the government is promoting is a plan to use a city as a platform. The components of a smart city are infrastructure, data and service. By applying information and communications technology and spatial information technology to the city and collecting and analyzing meaningful data using the Internet of Things, AI will use the information to provide services for citizens’ convenience.

Virtual Singapore is the smart city that duplicates the entire city with 3-D virtual reality technology to resolve aggregated urban issues. This year, Korea’s smart city project is at a fresh start point. We have high hopes as the government-designated smart city as a focus project and the urban renewal new deal plan is also promoted. In the early 2000s, the government set up U-City project, a predecessor of smart city, but it did not materialize into a success case. Instead of thinking of a city as a platform, U-City concentrated on integrating ICT in urban construction projects and failed to establish a network that used integrated spatial information technologies.

Therefore, the Moon Jae-in administration is investing 160 billion won ($148 million) over eight years on spatial information development with a vision to make the country smarter and lifestyle safer and convenient with spatial information. All data will be linked with spatial information and analyzed and utilized in virtual space, and intelligent spatial information utilization technology will be applied on the smart city platform.

The core of the smart city is the convergence of all technologies and services of the fourth industrial revolution. The priority task for the government and public agencies is to prepare the ground for various entities to constantly create a platform of innovative growth through the smart city.
