Hands up!

Hands up! - Artist Otani Workshop, surrounded by ceramic sculptures, playfully makes poses alongside his self-portrait during the opening of the Japanese artist’s first-ever solo exhibition in Korea last Thursday. The solo show of Otani Workshop, whose real name is Shigeru Otani, will run through Sept. 22 at the Paris-based gallery Perrotin’s Seoul branch in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul. With the world-renowned pop artist Takashi Murakami as his mentor and sometimes curator, the 38-year-old ceramic artist has developed his own style, which combines comic-style humor with aesthetics of simplified primitive and ancient sculptures. “I like ceramic sculptures, because they keep and show the creators’ handprints and the traces of the hands’ movements,” Otani said at the show’s opening.
