존 매케인의 유산, 품격
워싱턴이 온통 추도 분위기다. 공화당과 민주당, 전·현직을 막론하고 모든 정치인과 언론이 떠난 그를 애도하고 있다. 존 매케인. 베트남전 포로 출신 영웅, 36년간 공화당 상원의원으로 나랏일 해온 그에게 “조국에 헌신한 최고의 애국자” “누구와도 바꿀 수 없는 미국인” 등의 헌사가 잇따르고 있다.
매케인의 삶을 보여주는 사진들이 있다. 1967년 해군 비행사로 베트남전에서 격추당해 호수에 추락한 그를 월맹군과 주민들이 비행기에서 끌어내는 장면, 치명상을 입고 하노이 병원에 입원한 젊은 날의 매케인 사진이다. 월맹군은 매케인의 아버지가 태평양함대 사령관인 것을 알고 협상을 위해 석방을 제안했지만 매케인은 이를 거부하고 동료들과 4년을 함께했다. 오점도 있었지만 그의 삶은 이렇듯 노블레스 오블리주의 모범, 당파를 초월한 소신 정치로 평가받았다.
‘품격’은 매케인이 남긴 최고의 유산이다. 그는 강하게 비판할 땐 하지만 언제든 격(格)을 잃지 않았다. 극단으로 쪼개진 정치권의 상대를 존중했다. 조롱·힐난 따위와는 거리가 멀었다. “오늘 밤 미국인들은 지구 위의 가장 위대한 국민이 됐다.” 2008년 대선에서 버락 오바마에게 패한 뒤 한 승복 연설이다. 유세 기간에 한 지지 여성이 오바마의 인종과 성향을 문제 삼으며 “그를 믿을 수 없다. 아랍인”이라고 하자 매케인은 마이크를 잡고 “아니다. 그는 점잖은 가정의 훌륭한 미국 시민”이라고 옹호했다.

“나는 운명을 믿지 않는다. 단지 인격을 믿을 뿐이다.” 그가 2008년 마크 솔트와 함께 낸 책 『사람의 품격』(Character is Destiny, 2006년 개정판)에서 한 말이다. “태어날 때부터 무엇이 되기로 정해진 사람은 없다. 대신 ‘운명적’이라 할 만한 것은 인격”이라는 설명이다. 뇌종양으로 투병하며 지난 5월 발간한 회고록 『쉼 없는 파도』(The Restless Wave)에서도 그는 자신의 성찰에 집중했다. 막말을 일삼으며 국익이라는 이름으로 동맹을 휘젓는 트럼프에 대한 비판이 강하게 담겼을 것이란 예상을 깼다.
매케인 추모 열기는 트럼프가 초래한 품격 상실의 시대를 다시 한번 곱씹어 보는 계기가 된 듯하다. 우리는 어떤가. 소셜네트워크서비스(SNS)란 무기를 갖고 말 전쟁을 벌인다. 아침에 일어나면 어떤 자극적 언어로 국민의 귀를 잡아볼까 '고민'하는 듯한 정치인도 많다. 몇 번 주목은 하겠지만 국민의 마음은 멀어지고 정치권 전체의 불신과 혐오로 돌아간다. 매케인의 사망을 계기로 그의 품격 정치를 한번쯤 되새겼으면 한다.
