Lawmakers pledge to dig into Supreme Court

Ruling party lawmakers said on Tuesday that they would push for a parliamentary probe into allegations that the Supreme Court under former Chief Justice Yang Sung-tae used trials as bargaining chips with the previous administration.

The Supreme Court allegedly used politically sensitive trials to persuade senior presidential aides in the Park Geun-hye administration to support Yang’s bid to establish a new court of appeals.

Democratic lawmakers in the judiciary committee expressed their resolve to the party’s leadership and raised the need to find the truth in the power abuse case.

“We think that the National Assembly should look into the Supreme Court’s power abuse scandal and structural problems in the judiciary, which is not cooperating in prosecutors’ investigation,” the lawmakers said.

The case has pitted the judiciary against law enforcement. Prosecutors have requested search warrants for the offices and homes of those implicated in the scandal, mostly judges, but the courts have turned down their pleas.

“If a parliamentary probe reveals any wrongdoings, we will push to unseat justices involved in the case,” lawmakers said.

Hong Young-pyo, the Democratic Party’s floor leader, said he would first discuss the issue with others in the party and later seek the consultation of opposition parties.
