This is today’s anchor briefing.

A welcoming parade through the streets Pyongyang, the unbridled excitement of 150,000 spectators gathered in May Day Stadium and clear blue skies and water from Mount Paektu… All these are not places that one would expect to feel as comfortable as home.

The trips in the near future, and possibly even longer than that, will still be tense affairs. This tension was seen last April in the facial expressions of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as he took his steps towards South Korea. It was seen even before then in February when his sister came to the Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Stadium.

Now is the time to go back home. We are also preparing ourselves for the journey back home. The Chuseok holidays start early tomorrow. The time has come to rest and heal the scars and bruises gotten while living our lives. Considering the arduous summer we had, the next few days of rest will be precious to us.

However, we must not forget the uneasy reality we live in. Housing prices continue to soar while the jobs numbers fall. Our hearts are not at complete rest as we return or get ready to return home. The fact that the number of people spending the Chuseok holidays alone has increased is enough proof to prove the changes in our society.

Home is a place that we yearn for and yet wish to break away from. A place that, at times, creates messy ties with others that leaves scars behind. Here at Anchor Briefing we would like to send a message to our viewers that embrace the complicated feelings we all feel about home.

I love you.

Soseki Natsume, a 19th century Japanese novelist, stressed over how to translate “I love you” while teaching English Literature at a university. He wondered how to translate the words that everyone at that time had a hard time expressing because of their shy hearts. After hesitation, the novelist finally jotted down the following sentence: “The moon is very bright tonight.” As a matter of fact, if two people were close enough to watch the moon together late at night, then enough was said about the matter.

We hope that all of the bumbling hearts heading home and people looking for consolation can find comfort for the next few days. For those in Seoul, Pyongyang and in their home towns… The moon that shines bright through the night will send the message from our hearts.

* bumbling: 갈팡질팡하는
