This is today’s anchor briefing.

“There are six bullets in my body that were fired by the Japanese. Your Honor, these bullets [are proof] that I was ready to become the soil for the resistance,” - Movie “Assassination” (2015)

He, who betrayed his brothers by working as a secret whistleblower for the Japanese government, pretended to be a patriot after the end of Japan’s imperial reign. He was even pronounced innocent of treachery in trial, in a very honorable fashion. The movie was based on a true story that tells the tale of our shadowed history which was never settled.

And in these shadows is, like in the movie, a family of three generations who have pretended to be patriots working for Independence. We are still aware of the embarrassing moments in history when we awarded medals to patriots that were pro-Japan collaborators in disguise. The shadows of Japan’s colonization have been so deeply rooted in our history for an extended period of time.

* patriot: 애국자

However, once you think about it, only 70 years have passed since Japan’s colonial rule. Just as we have tried our best not to forget the humiliation which scared us in the past, they too have not forgotten the fact that they ruled over us. Only 70 years have passed. Maybe that is why… Our memories are now, once again, clashing with theirs against a flag that stands for the period of ruling and being ruled over.

The Rising Sun Flag is a symbol associated with imperial Japan. Their power supposedly spreads out towards the endless horizons like the rays of the sun pictured. In order to ensure such power, the menacing crimes like, cruel coercion, a compulsory mandatory draft and sex slaves for the Japanese army were committed. Every last detail is purposely documented in the flag which is now placed on top of a warship that belongs to the Japanese Self Defense Forces -- an organization that resembles an army, but is supposedly not. That ship is now coming towards Jeju Island.

Traitors, who betrayed their colleagues and worked as informants for the Japanese, are still very influential in our nation. This is why we can not perceive the flag as just another flag because of the countless traitors in our nation today.
