Korea Inc. starts 1st half recruitingKorea’s big companies will kick off their biannual recruitment this month, and the competition is guaranteed to be cutthroat.
While some companies began accepting applications late last month, most including Samsung, Lotte and CJ will start later this month, according to job information providers Job Korea and Incruit on Friday.
Hyundai affiliates, including auto parts manufacturer Hyundai Mobis and automotive electronics affiliate Hyundai Autron, recently started accepting job applications for new employees and researchers. The deadline for Hyundai Mobis is Sunday and for Hyundai Autron March 14.
Kia Motors, which is walking away from the longstanding tradition of biannual recruitment drives, did start accepting applications for new employees in its brand strategy and sports marketing departments, while SK Group’s IT service unit SK C&C and LG Chem are accepting job applications through March 10 and March 14.
Though most companies have yet to announce actual recruitment dates, job applications will be accepted this month and job aptitude tests held in April, according to Incruit’s analysis. Last year, Samsung accepted job applications through March 20 and held the Global Samsung Aptitude Test on April 15. Last year, SK began accepting job applications in March and held its job aptitude test on April 24.
Companies that are expected to start recruitment relatively late include Lotte and Posco. Last year, Lotte accepted job applications through March 29 and held its job aptitude test on April 28 while Posco began accepting job applications in early April.
“Each conglomerate shows different characteristics when it comes to recruiting new employees,” said a spokesperson for Incruit. “[Applicants] of LG Group are allowed to apply to up to three of its affiliates while Hanwha Group conducts an in-depth interview instead of holding a job aptitude test.”
Competition among job seekers is expected to become more intense this year. Hyundai Motor announced last month that it was ending biannual recruitment along with its sister company Kia Motors, saying the custom no longer works in the rapidly changing auto market. It said it would hire new talent year round.
A recent survey by Job Korea showed that biannual recruitment in the first half of the year is expected to drop by 8.7 percent compared to a year earlier.
