Workers at GM Korea’s R&D center vote to strike

Workers at GM Korea’s new research and development company voted to strike over efforts to adjust their conditions of employment.

According to GM Korea’s labor union Tuesday, 82.6 percent voted in favor of striking yesterday afternoon. As more than 50 percent of workers voted for the strike, employees from GM Technical Center Korea could walk out at any time.

GM Technical Center Korea was spun off from GM Korea in January this year.

The standalone R&D center leads global engineering for two vehicle programs allocated to GM Korea’s manufacturing operations - a subcompact sport utility vehicle and a cross utility vehicle.

The technical center plans to adopt performance-based pay and stricter disciplinary measures while requesting workers to submit plans in advance to participate in labor action.

Workers at the spun-off company strongly oppose the measures. They demand the same collective bargaining agreements that GM Korea workers have with management. The technical center does not have its own union.

The research center’s management and GM Korea’s union held nine rounds of negotiations until last week to narrow the gap over the proposals but failed to reach an agreement.
