The Moment of Lift: How Empowering Women Changes the World

AUTHOR : Melinda Gates

PUBLISHER : Flatiron Books

For the last 20 years, Melinda Gates has been on a mission to find solutions for people with the most urgent needs, wherever they live. Throughout this journey, one thing has become increasingly clear to her: If you want to lift a society up, you need to stop keeping women down.

In this moving and compelling book, Melinda shares lessons she’s learned from the inspiring people she’s met during her work and travels around the world. As she writes in the introduction: “That is why I had to write this book - to share the stories of people who have given focus and urgency to my life. I want all of us to see ways we can lift women up where we live.”

Melinda’s unforgettable narrative is backed by startling data as she presents the issues that most need our attention - from child marriage to lack of access to contraceptives to gender inequity in the workplace. And, for the first time, she writes about her personal life and the road to equality in her own marriage. Throughout, she shows how there has never been more opportunity to change the world - and ourselves.

The Silent Patient

AUTHOR : Alex Michaelides

PUBLISHER : Celadon Books

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations - a search for the truth that threatens to consume him.

Korea’s Olympic Icon - Kim Un-young’s Resolute Odyssey

AUTHOR: David Miller

PUBLISHER: Seoul Selection

The book is a critical biography of the late Dr. Kim Un-yong, the founding president of the World Taekwondo and of the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters, and the former Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) president and International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice president. This biography is of special significance as a work by David Miller, veteran sports journalist and award-winning author from Britain who has spent six decades traveling to sports events around the globe. Miller has covered 24 Olympic Games, attending 45 annual Sessions of the International Olympic Committee, 14 World Cup football finals and more than 30 sports in 120 countries.

“Korea’s Olympic Icon - Kim Un-yong’s Resolute Odyssey” provides profound insights into the exhilarating life of Kim Un-yong, a man whose light shone brightest on the international stage, leaving a huge footprint on sports history not only in Korea and Asia, but across the world. The biography follows a thoroughly researched and considered perspective of Kim’s resilient life and career despite challenges and adversities.

While the focus of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) publication in 2017, A Big Man Who Embraced the World, Kim Un-Yong, recounted primarily Kim’s life and career as national sports hero, this latest work delves into his international impact. Miller and Kim interacted over many years and enjoyed a particular closeness; the author has stated that “there would never have been an Olympics in Seoul had it not been for Kim.”

30/50 Club: A Dialogue on S. Korea, U.S., China, and N. Korea

AUTHOR : Hong Sang-hwa

PUBLISHER : Korean Literature Inc.

Korea is the seventh country to join the “30-50 Club,” countries with a per capita gross national income of more than $30,000 and a population of more than 50 million. Hong Sang-hwa puts this wonderful achievement on the front of a book. Hong concentrates on the fact that the six countries to achieve this distinction before Korea - which includes the United States, Japan, Germany, Britain, France and Italy - were all able to accumulate capital owing to the exploitation of their colonies (in the case of the United States, “residence colonialism”), while Korea, on the other hand, was able to make the achievement by having overcome the hardships of being colonized. Curiosity surrounding the factors behind this miraculous success is causing readers to dig deeply into the book for answers.

This book, which consists of four parts, is written in the form of a dialogue. This appears to be a literary device used for the purpose of unraveling some rather serious subjects in a friendly and approachable way. The first and second parts consist of in-depth discussions with an economist living in the United States and a writer, and the third and fourth parts consist of in-depth interviews with a Chinese expert who majored in economics and sociology, and a writer. Hong has added a relevant book and articles to the English edition to provide the readers with a more in-depth understanding of the content.
