‘Parasite’ to be submitted to Oscars

Director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” was selected as the local film that will be submitted to be nominated for Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, the Korean Film Council revealed on Thursday.

“After long discussions and deliberation, we chose ‘Parasite’ out of the eight local films that applied for the selection,” said the organization.

“[‘Parasite’ is] already a well-known film around the world receiving attention from numerous international film festivals after it won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival,” a selection judge said while explaining the reasons for their decision. “The film is also a representative work of the local film industry worthy of the title due to the artistic and technical perfection achieved, and the competence of the American film distribution company were all taken account into choosing the film.”

Bong’s seventh feature film “Parasite” highlights problems created from the growing income gap between the poor and the rich. The film surpassed the 10-million-ticket-sales-mark at the local box office in June.
