U.S. Rep. John Moolenaar visited SK Global Chemical Americas’ packaging material plant in Michigan on Monday.

The packaging material, commonly known by the Saran brand, is a key component used in packaging for food producers and medical device makers, according to the company. SK Global Chemical acquired the business from Dow Chemical in 2017, including the facilities in Michigan, the right to the Saran brand, relevant technologies and intellectual property.

The deal was part of SK’s initiative to increase its foothold in chemicals and high-tech materials in the U.S. market. In the past two years, the factory has increased employment by more than 20 percent.

The congressman was given a tour of the facility and the products made there.

“It was outstanding to meet the hardworking employees in our community who make products that are used across the country and around the world,” said Rep. John Moolenaar during the visit. “I will keep working in Congress to support policies that help Michigan workers and ensure America continues its international leadership in science, research and innovation.”

Moolenaar serves as the co-chair of the U.S. Congressional Chemistry Caucus and has spearheaded laws to develop chemical research and development.

SK Global Chemical Americas is a subsidiary of SK Global Chemical, under battery maker SK Innovation, which has recently strengthened its presence in the United States. SK Innovation broke ground on an electric vehicle battery plant in the state of Georgia earlier this year. The $1.7 billion investment by SK is the largest foreign investment deal ever in the state.
