Marking the 40th anniversary of the premiere of “Sweeney Todd” on Broadway, the Korean production of musical “Sweeney Todd” is set to hit the stage with a stellar cast including Cho Seung-woo and Oak Joo-hyun.

The musical was first staged on Broadway in 1979 and has been remade multiple times since, winning multiple Tony Awards along the way.

The musical revolves around a barber named Benjamin Barker, who will be played by Cho. He is living a happy life with his beautiful wife and daughter, but everything changes when he is falsely accused of a crime by Judge Turpin. The barber eventually loses his family and is exiled to Australia.

Barker returns 15 years later, renames himself Sweeney Todd and attempts to get revenge on Judge Turpin with the help of his accomplice Mrs. Lovett, who will be played by Oak.

The show starts at 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Wednesdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.

Tickets range from 60,000 won ($50) to 150,000 won.

SIMCHEONG

Universal Ballet Company will be staging one of its original productions “Simcheong,” a cultural mash-up that blends ballet with a traditional Korean tale about a girl named Simcheong, who sacrifices herself to help her blind father see.

She decides to jump into the sea, but instead of dying, she becomes the queen of an underwater kingdom. She and her father eventually meet again.

The show starts at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Tickets range from 10,000 won to 120,000 won.

GRAND MINT FESTIVAL

Grand Mint Festival (GMF) is back for its 13th year. Amid music festivals and concerts which heavily feature K-pop boy groups or rock music bands, the GMF has been staging performances of various musicians from indie vocalists to singers who are less featured on TVs and has become a major festival for fans who are thirsty for diverse music.

The music festival organizer has been unveiling the lineup for the two-day music festival, and the list includes musicians of various genres, from ballad singer K.will, who is well known as a singer for many famous dramas, to singer-songwriter Sunwoo Jung-a, who worked with G-Dragon of K-pop boy band Big Bang.

One-day tickets are priced at 99,000 won and two-day tickets are 158,000 won when they are purchased online in advance. Tickets are still purchasable from the concert venue on the days of the festival.

THE TALES OF HOFFMANN

Marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of French composer Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880), the Korean National Opera presents “The Tales of Hoffmann,” a major creation of the composer.

The operatic performance will have three different stories based on the “The Tales of Hoffmann.”

French opera director Vincent Boussard will take the helm of the performance, while Russian tenor Alexey Dolgov and Korean tenor Kook Yun-jong, also known as Oliver Kook, are double cast for the role of Hoffmann. Korean bass Sim In-sung will also join.

The performance starts at 7:30 on Oct. 24 and 25 and at 4 p.m. on Oct. 26 and 27.

Ticket prices range from 10,000 to 150,000 won.

RACHAEL YAMAGATA

American singer-songwriter Rachael Yamagata, known in Korea for hits such as “Be Be Your Love” and “No Direction,” is returning to Seoul. The 42-year-old musician has been holding concerts in Korea since 2009, and her upcoming show is part of her world tour which began in January in New York.

According to the concert organizer, the musician will perform with her own band, unlike previous years.

Yamagata broke into music in 2004 and soared to stardom with her first full-length album “Happenstance,” which contains her hit “Be Be Your Love.”

She was once dubbed the “new Norah Jones” with her sultry voice, but the musician has been paving her own path since her debut.

This concert will be a good opportunity for Korean fans to see Yamagata perform several songs that have appeared on the soundtrack of the Korean drama series “One Spring Night,” which aired on MBC between May and July of this year.

Yamagata wrote and composed each of her songs that appeared in the show, and it was the first time for the musician to work with a Korean drama production team.

The concert starts at 6 p.m. Ticket prices range from 99,000 won to 110,000 won.

HAN-NA CHANG & TRONDHEIM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Chief conductor and artistic leader of the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Han-Na Chang, will be hosting a concert alongside acclaimed pianist Dong Hyek Lim.

Although both musicians once worked for EMI Classics, this concert will be the first time that these esteemed artists will have the opportunity to perform together.

Chang will be conducting the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra with Lim on the piano as they play Grieg’s “Peer Gynt Suite No. 1,” “Piano Concerto in A minor” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 6 in B minor.”

The show starts at 8 p.m.

Tickets range from 40,000 won to 200,000 won.

FILM CONCERT: HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS

Good news for Harry Potter fans - the score of the fantasy film will be performed live during two performances at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in central Seoul.

“Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” the second film, will be screened in the Grand Theater while songs from the soundtrack are played by the Korea Coop Orchestra.

Since 2014, the 70-member orchestra has performed during many operas and held its first film concert - “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” - last year.

The show starts at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 and 17.

Tickets range from 30,000 won to 120,000 won.
