Comfort women film heads to U.S.

The film “Shusenjo: The Main Battleground of the Comfort Women Issue” will be screening at a number of U.S. universities, according to a statement released on Sunday from the organization Comfort Women Action for Redress & Education (CARE).

Beginning on Monday, the film will be making the rounds at the University of North Georgia, the University of Minnesota, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), California State University, Northridge and the University of Southern California (USC).

Japanese-American director Miki Dezaki will also be attending the screenings to answer questions from the audiences.

“Shusenjo: The Main Battleground of the Comfort Women Issue” is a documentary that sheds light on the reasons why the issue of comfort women has long been a controversy between Japan and Korea. The film contains interviews from famous Japanese conservatives.

Meanwhile, five of the interviewees have sued the director for defamation, The New York Times reported on Sept. 18. The plaintiffs are demanding compensation and an immediate halt of all public screenings of the documentary, arguing that they agreed only to be interviewed for the director’s graduate thesis.

The director’s lawyer, Makoto Iwai, responded to their claims by stating that all of the interviewees signed forms giving the director full editorial control and copyright over their interviews.
