6-Hands Dinner

Soigne, Seocho District

Today

Chef Jun Lee of Soigne in Seoul is hosting Chef Junghyun Park of Atomix and Chef Woo-Joong Kwon of Kwon Sook Soo for an exclusive dinner this evening, following a sold-out six-hands dinner at Atomix in New York on Sept. 2 and 3. The two events are the first time the three chefs - all alumni of Korea’s Kyunghee University - have collaborated.

Chef Lee says, “I’m excited to be bringing together Chef Kwon and Chef Park all the way from the United States, for this six-hands dinner at Soigne. The innovation and creativity coming from the kitchens of Korean chefs at the moment is really world-class.”

The six-hands dinner in Seoul represents a rare opportunity for local foodies to experience dishes from three leading names in Korean fine dining.

Kwon Sook Soo is a two-Michelin-star restaurant that offers modern interpretations of Korea’s traditional “single table dining” culture. One-Michelin-star Atomix’s innovative Korean cuisine has been making waves in New York’s dining scene, and its interior received the 2019 James Beard award for Outstanding Restaurant Design. Both Atomix and Soigne were designed by Studiowriters; a Korean design agency led by fellow Kyunghee University alumni, Younglae Kim.

Chef Lee of Soigne graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in 2010, before beginning his solo cooking career in 2011 as the first Korean chef to operate only pop-up restaurants. He opened Soigne in 2015, to much critical acclaim, and was awarded a Michelin Star in the guide’s first Seoul edition in 2017.

Chef Lee also runs Doughroom, an authentic Italian restaurant in southern Seoul, and Dear.Wild, a table-side service European eatery at the Plaza Hotel in central Seoul.

Andong International Mask Dance Festival

Andong and Hahoe Village, North Gyeongsang

Through Oct. 6

For centuries, the mask dance was used to indirectly criticize the yangban class, or the ruling elite of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), by the common people.

Direct criticism of the yangban was strictly forbidden at the time, so people satirized the yangban from behind masks, developing the craft into various forms of mask dance with regional variations.

Visitors to Hahoe Village, one of two Korean villages recently added to Unesco’s World Heritage List, can see the village’s Confucian cultural characteristics.

Baekje Cultural Festival

Buyeo, Gongju and Nonsan, South Chungcheong

Through Oct. 6

This festival, one of the oldest cultural festivals in the country, highlights the golden days of the Baekje Kingdom (18 B.C. - A.D. 660), an ancient Korean kingdom located in the southwestern part of the Korean Peninsula. Baekje was one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea, together with Goguryeo and Silla. This year’s festival will feature nearly 100 events, including parades, a memorial ceremony for the four great kings of Baekje, folk games, exhibitions and traditional Korean music and mask dance performances.
