20 years since her debut, Baek Z Young looks back: As younger audiences find her music, the ‘Ballad Queen’ is eager for more

“Lee Jung-hyun’s nickname is ‘Joseon’s Lady Gaga.’ They call me ‘Tapgol Chungha.’ Isn’t that ingenious?”

When asked if she knew how viewers referred to her on YouTube, Baek Z Young let out a loud laugh. Baek, now 43, is beginning to win over a generation of young fans thanks to the SBS Kpop Classic YouTube channel, which streams Korean songs from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, including hers, all day long. Baek’s newly-earned nickname pays respect to her place in the K-pop world - it’s a combination of Tapgol, the name of a park frequented by Korean seniors, and Chungha, one of the most popular singers today.

“Chungha is not only pretty but really flexible and good at expressing things in detail. It’s an honor to have a nickname based on her.”

Baek seemed both excited and anxious as she introduced her new EP “Reminiscence” to the press ahead of its launch in late September. Although she’s been in the industry for two decades, “Reminiscence,” which came out on Friday, was her first new release since 2016, apart from the occasional drama soundtrack appearance. Since getting married to actor Jung Suk-won in 2013 and giving birth to a daughter in 2017, Baek had largely been absent from the charts, only holding concerts or going on TV.

“I think I was actually more nervous last year. I wondered then ‘Is next year really the 20th anniversary of my debut? You’re kidding.’ I wanted to release a full-length album but there wasn’t enough time.

“I’ve faced a lot of ups and downs and overcome them, so I wanted to create music that could look back on those memories rather than seek new change. My staff found the perfect word for it, ‘reminiscence.’ I hope that people can recall not only the memories of the past, but even the places and smells of those times.”

Baek had a difficult time deciding the title track for “Reminiscence.” She only settled on “We” after listening to the opinions of the other people she was working with.

“Although they’re slightly different, in the end, all the songs on the new EP are songs about break-ups. Sometimes you make a lot of good memories until the end rather than separating with heartbreak and sadness. I wanted to express that.”

“I wanted an actor around my age who could understand the emotions in my song and cry on cue, so I was really happy when Ji agreed to appear in my video. I went to the set and saw that his eyes were all puffy from crying so much. I was amazed that he could express his emotions like that when there weren’t any clear lines or plot.”

Although Baek’s hits like “I Won’t Love” (2005) and “Like Being Shot by a Bullet” (2008) are karaoke favorites that many like to belt out when they’re having relationship problems, Baek herself admitted that she’s “not really a vocalist who draws on my own emotions.”

“I like to draw on the emotions of the protagonists of the songs, but I cried a lot when recording the track ‘Monolog’ for this album. If the girl in the song was my friend, I would’ve hit her back really hard, and told her not to be like that.

“The tone of my voice itself is really minor, so it’s easier for me to express sadness compared to others. I often get asked to play it down a little bit because I sound so desperate.”

Over the years, Baek has made music of many different genres. She’s affectionately called the “ballad queen,” but her dance duet with 2PM’s Taecyeon “My Ear’s Candy” (2009) was a huge success when it came out and has since been made into countless parodies. But Baek admits that ballads are the highlights of her 20-year-long career.

“I think charting No. 1 with ‘I Won’t Love’ in 2005 was my happiest moment. It made me feel like I was standing back up, that I could start again. I also got to rethink the meanings of my songs ‘Like Being Shot by a Bullet’ and ‘Don’t Forget’ (2009) when I was preparing for the Pyongyang concert last April.”

“If I have the chance I want to challenge myself to make dance music again,” she added. One of the first songs she ever released were Latin-influenced, like “Sad Salsa” and “Dash” (2000).

“I think Latin music will resonate well with Koreans. If I watch my performances from then again I’m using a lot of force from start to end, but I think if I try it now I’ll be able to control my tempo. I wanted another proper go at it so I’ve been giving a lot of references to songwriters, but that might have become a distraction because I still haven’t come across any good songs.”

Is there any other realm of music that she wants to be queen of next?

“I’m not always happy after receiving a new nickname because that means that I’m also given new responsibilities. I think a singer who becomes part of people’s everyday lives has much more influence.”

Baek is about to kick off a nationwide tour titled “BAEK Stage” starting next month in celebration of her 20th debut anniversary. She’ll hold the first concert on Nov. 23 in Suwon, Gyeonggi, and go on to perform in Daegu; Busan; Cheongju, North Chungcheong and Seoul until March.

Baek also hinted at holding a concert abroad as well.

“I want to meet fans more often through concerts. I’m also planning shows in the Americas for next year.”

20주년 맞은 백지영 “‘탑골 청하’ 영광…댄스 다시 도전할 것”

“이정현씨 별명이 ‘조선의 레이디 가가’래요. 저는 ‘탑골 청하’고. 정말 기발하지 않아요? 으하하.”
지난달 24일 서울 신사동에서 만난 가수 백지영(43)은 ‘온라인 탑골공원’을 알고 있냐는 질문에 호탕하게 웃었다. 90년대 ‘인기가요’를 스트리밍해주는 유튜브 채널 ‘SBS K팝 클래식’을 필두로 형성된 새로운 놀이가 반가운 듯했다. “청하가 예쁘기도 하지만 몸도 유연하고 표현도 디테일하던데. 그런 친구에 빗댄 별명이니 영광이죠.” 1999년 ‘선택’으로 데뷔해 어느덧 20주년을 맞은 그에겐 그리운 시절이 10~20대에게는 숨은 보물찾기가 이어지는 ‘재발견의 장’이 된 셈이다.

4일 새 미니앨범 ‘레미니센스(Reminiscence)’를 발표하는 그는 설렘과 긴장의 뒤섞인 얼굴로 기자들을 맞았다. 지난해 드라마 ‘미스터 션샤인’의 수록곡 ‘씨 유 어게인(See You Again)’ 등 OST 작업은 종종 했지만, 싱글은 2016년 ‘그대의 마음’ 이후 3년, 앨범은 2013년 OST 베스트 앨범 ‘플래시백(Flash Back)’ 이후 6년 만이기 때문이다. 2013년 배우 정석원과 결혼하고 2017년 딸 하임이를 낳은 후에도 방송과 공연 활동은 꾸준히 해 왔지만 오랜만에 본업으로 돌아왔으니 떨릴 수밖에.

“사실 올해보다 작년이 더 설렜던 것 같아요. ‘내년이 진짜 20주년이야? 말도 안 돼’ 하면서. 정규앨범을 내고 싶은 생각도 있었지만 준비 기간 1년으로는 부족하더라고요. 그동안 우여곡절도 많았지만 그 모든 걸 딛고 맞이하는 거니까 새로운 변화보다는 그동안 추억을 잘 회상하고 싶다는 마음이었는데 스태프들이 ‘레미니센스’라는 꼭 맞는 단어를 찾아줬어요. 음악을 들으면서 그때의 기억뿐 아니라 공간감이나 냄새까지도 떠올릴 수 있길 바랐거든요.”

총 6곡이 수록된 이번 앨범의 타이틀곡을 놓고 ‘우리가’와 ‘별거 아닌 가사’가 끝까지 경합을 벌였다. 백지영과 대표의 의견이 갈려서 블라인드 모니터를 통해 결정했다. 지난 6월 13년간 함께 해온 매니저 최동열씨가 차린 신생 기획사 트라이어스로 옮긴 백지영은 “예전 같았으면 끝까지 우겼을 텐데 믿고 맡기니까 너무 편했다”고 했다. “조금씩 다르긴 하지만 결국 다 따뜻한 이별 노래예요. 막 슬프고 처절하게 헤어지기보다는 관계가 마지막까지 오는 동안 좋았던 추억들도 많잖아요. 그런 걸 표현하고 싶었어요.”

타이틀곡이 된 ‘우리가’ 뮤직비디오에는 배우 지성(42)이 출연한다. 1996년 포지션의 ‘너에게’로 데뷔한 그로서도 2008년 김범수의 ‘슬픔활용법’ 이후 11년만의 뮤직비디오 나들이다. “제 노래의 감성을 이해할 수 있는 또래 배우 중 진한 눈물 연기가 가능한 사람이었으면 좋겠다 싶었는데 지성씨가 흔쾌히 섭외에 응해줘서 너무 기뻤죠. 촬영장에도 갔는데 너무 많이 울어서 눈이 다 부어 있더라고요. 명확한 대사나 줄거리가 있는 것도 아닌데 노래만 듣고 그렇게 감정을 표현할 수 있다는 게 신기하기도 하고.”

스스로 본인 노래를 들으며 울어본 적은 없었을까. “제가 가진 감정을 끌어다 쓰는 보컬리스트는 아니거든요. 가사 속 주인공의 감정을 끄집어내서 표현하는 스타일인데 이번에 ‘혼잣말이야’를 녹음하면서 많이 울었어요. 그 여자가 너무 모자라더라고. 제 친구 같았으면 막 등을 후려쳤을 것 같아요. 그러지 말라고. 워낙 가지고 있는 음색 자체가 마이너하다 보니 다른 분들보다 슬픔을 표현하는 게 수월하긴 하죠. 너무 처절하니까 감정을 좀 빼달라는 요구를 많이 받는 편이고.”

가장 기억에 남는 곡으로 꼽은 것도 전부 발라드다. “‘사랑 안해’(2005)로 1위 한 게 가장 기쁜 순간이었던 것 같아요. 이제 다시 일어섰구나, 다시 시작해도 되겠구나 싶고. ‘총 맞은 것처럼’(2008)와 ‘잊지 말아요’(2009)는 지난해 4월 평양 공연을 준비하면서 다시 한번 곡의 의미를 되새기게 됐고요.” 가장 힘든 순간을 묻는 말에도 “하나만 고르기가 어렵다. 다 얘기하면 너무 구차하지 않냐”며 웃음을 잃지 않았다. “매번 무게도 다르고 강도도 다르지만, 나이가 들수록 데미지는 줄어드는 것 같아요. 실수도 많이 하고, 자주 욱하기도 하지만 다행히 반성도 빠른 편이예요. 더 열심히 해야죠.”

그는 “기회가 되면 댄스 음악에도 다시 도전해 보고 싶다”고 했다. 2PM 옥택연과 함께한 ‘내 귀에 캔디’(2009)나 비스트 용준형과 부른 ‘굿 보이’(2012) 같은 듀엣곡은 쉽지 않겠지만 ‘대시’ ‘새드 살사’(2000) 등 초기 선보인 라틴 음악은 이어가고 싶다는 것. “라틴 음악이 한국 정서와 잘 맞는 것 같아요. 그때 무대 영상을 보면 처음부터 끝까지 힘밖에 없는데 지금 하면 완급 조절도 가능할 것 같고. 제대로 하고 싶은 마음에 작곡가들에게 레퍼런스도 많이 드렸는데 그게 오히려 방해가 됐는지 아직 좋은 곡을 못 만났어요.”

댄스ㆍ발라드ㆍOST 등에서 고른 흥행 성적을 보이며 ‘여왕’ 자리를 꿰찬 백지영이 현재 욕심 나는 타이틀은 무엇일까. 그는 “새로운 수식어를 받는 순간 책임감도 주어지기 때문에 달갑지만은 않다”며 “사람들의 일상에 스며드는 것이 더 저력 있는 가수라 생각한다”고 했다. 다음 달 전국투어 ‘백스테이지(BAEK Stage)’를 시작하는 그는 “앞으로는 공연을 통해 팬들과 더 자주 만나고 싶다”며 “내년 미주 공연도 계획 중”이라고 밝혔다.
