Fence being built across the country to stop sick boars

Korea is building a wall near the border to halt the incursion of wild boars infected with African swine fever (ASF).

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs on Monday, fences will be installed across the northern part of the country to prevent infected wild boars from roaming south.

The government plans to first build fences over 200 kilometers (124 miles) from Paju, Gyeonggi, in the west to Cheorwon County, Gangwon, located in the center of the peninsula, by mid-November.

The government ultimately hopes to build fences up to the northeastern corner of the country in Goseong County in the future.

The measures have been put into place because of changes in the situation and conditions, said Lee Jae-ouk, agriculture vice minister.

Although there has yet to be additional confirmed cases of ASF at pig farms since Oct. 9, authorities have continued to find carcasses of wild boars infected with the deadly disease near the border area.
