SK Telecom decides to finally pull the plug on 2G service

SK Telecom announced Thursday that it has submitted an application to the Ministry of Science and ICT to discontinue its 2G service.

With 2G phones, users cannot surf the internet. The phone mainly supports voice calls and SMS.

The service will be closed following government approval. The approval could take a month or two. Along with the approval, the government will set out a specific timeline.

SK Telecom has been operating two support measures since February to help 2G phone users convert to phones enabled with 3G, 4G long term evolution or 5G services, it said. The carrier is offering either a phone price discount or monthly phone bill discount as users change their phones and phone plans.
