Samsung, LG honored at Innovation Awards

Samsung and LG Electronics dominated the Innovation Awards for CES 2020, including the “Best of Innovation” titles.

The Consumer Technology Association (CTA), the owner and organizer of the annual trade show, announced the honorees for the CES 2020 Innovation awards on Thursday. The competition selects consumer technology products across 28 product categories every year based on design and engineering. The “Best of Innovation” recognition is only given to those rating the highest in each product category.

Samsung received a total of 46 Innovation Awards this year - its best performance ever. It won in a wide range of categories, including displays, gaming, fitness and smart home. In terms of product category, its mobile devices received the most, 17 Innovation Awards, followed by television with 12.

The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G was one of the three Samsung “Best of Innovation” awardees. The other two were display products. Among other notable products on the Innovation Awards list were the Galaxy Watch Active 2, the Galaxy Book Flex - the first laptop to have a QLED display - and its mobile payment system, Samsung Pay.

LG Electronics won 16 CES Innovation Awards in total, among which three were given to its OLED TVs. This is the eighth consecutive year that LG has taken away awards with the product.

One LG winner of the “Best of Innovation” title was the “LG Signature OLED R,” a rollable television that also picked up an Innovation Award last year. Short for organic light-emitting diodes, OLED TV panels emit their own light and therefore do not need a backlight. The LG Signature OLED 8K, the first 8K-resolution TV with an OLED panel, won the Innovation Award in two categories.

LG Styler, a standing clothes cleaning device that looks like a slim closet, won the CES Innovation Award for its second time in a row. In the mobile sector, its LG V50S ThinQ, sold as the G8X ThinQ in the United States, and the company’s first-ever 5G phone, the LG V50 ThinQ, also made it onto the list.

CES 2020 will take place in Las Vegas between Jan. 7 and 10. Samsung and LG will display their award-winning products in their respective booths.

CTA announced Thursday that Samsung Electronics President and CEO Kim Hyun-suk, who heads the company’s consumer electronics division, will deliver a Keynote Address during the event on Jan. 6. CES’s Keynote Address program showcases “global industry leaders offering insider insights into the technologies changing our industry and our lives,” according to CES.

This will be the first time in three years that a Samsung executive will be taking the stage, following Samsung SDS President and CEO Hong Won-pyo in 2016.
