SK Innovation, Doosan to help island go greenSK Innovation and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction have agreed to take part in a Vietnamese environmental project.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding Thursday with the Quang Ngai provincial government, Vietnam’s Vingroup and Korean wave energy solutions provider Ingine to turn An Binh Island into a zero-carbon zone.
The project seeks to protect the environmental assets of the 690,000-square-meter (171-acre) island and improve its 500 residents’ quality of life with environment-friendly technologies.
Under the agreement, SK Innovation will provide its plastic waste recycling technology to reduce the amount of waste in the region. The company is projected to work with Quang Ngai provincial government to supply LED lights for streetlights and public offices while bringing in environment-friendly infrastructure like cooking appliances using solar power.
SK Innovation has been working with the Quang Ngai provincial government since late 2010, when the company provided support for early operations and maintenance of the Dung Quat Refinery, the first refinery plant for Vietnam.
SK Innovation said the company signed the agreement as a part of its goal to expand its double bottom line efforts, which pursue both economic value and social value in corporate initiatives.
As part of the agreement, Doosan Heavy will support maintenance and repair projects for a desalination plant the company built in 2012 to provide consistent clean water supply for island residents.
Ingine agreed to build a wave-power plant with a capacity of between 50 kilowatts and 100 kilowatts by 2020, which will help the island rely less on electric and diesel power generation.
Vingroup, a partner company for SK Group in Vietnam, is having its car manufacturing subsidiary VinFast supply 20 electric scooters and charging stations to the island, with the ultimate goal of replacing all motorcycles in the region with electric ones.
