Nursing academy cadet takes top prize in speaking contest
Some 60 cadets from the military, naval, air force and nursing academies signed up for the second Cadet Public Speaking Competition, and 36 made it to the semifinal round, which was held Friday at the KMA.
Eight cadets went home with prizes.
The top four winners have been invited to the Korea JoongAng Daily’s third annual Public Diplomacy Night event slated for Monday afternoon in southern Seoul, where ambassadors and their spouses will join to celebrate and share the public diplomacy activities they initiated throughout the year.
While the Grand Prize went to Yoo, the Gold Prize went to Choi Seo-yun from the Korea Air Force Academy, the Silver Prize went to Choi Jae-won of the KMA and the Bronze Prize went to Lee Eun-ju from the Korea Armed Forces Nursing Academy.
Winners of the Participation Prize were Koh Hyeon-song and Jo Yo-han from the KMA, Jung Yoon-jun from the Korea Air Force Academy and Han Min-su from the Republic of Korea Naval Academy.
In the semifinal round held Friday, 36 students were randomly divided into four groups, in which they gave five-minute speeches in English in front of judges about which historical figure they would meet if they could turn back time and what they would say to them. One cadet with the highest mark from each group made it to the finals, and the cadet with the second-highest mark in each group were given Participation Prizes.
In the final round, the four cadets had to repeat their five-minute speeches to the judges and give an additional speech about a randomly chosen topic.
