Netflix finds way to make local theaters happy: By giving films more time to be screened in cinemas, multiplexes and directors get what they want

Global video streaming leader Netflix seems to be swallowing some of its pride and is now looking for ways to coexist with movie theaters. For years, local theater chains have been boycotting Netflix films due to the fact that they do not conform to the conventional holdback period of at least two to three weeks or up to three months. But the number of Netflix films released in local theaters this year has increased to four instead of only one last year.

In the film industry, a holdback period is the amount of time it takes for a film to be transferred to other forms of distribution. Traditional films usually have a two-to-three week holdback period in which the theater chains hold the sole distribution rights before the films are circulated on other distribution forms, such as video on demand.

“Marriage Story,” by director Noah Baumbach, which was released in local theaters last Thursday, is a Netflix-distributed film starring Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver. It vividly depicts a couple at the end of their relationship - the ugly legal processes and the emotional energy spent on it - while they simultaneously try to protect their son. In the midst of their struggle, the humorous and bitter parts of ending a relationship make audiences laugh and cry. The film received critical acclaim after its premiere at 2019 Venice Film Festival and is also director Bong Joon-ho’s “favorite movie of the year.” The film will be released worldwide through Netflix on Friday.

Another film, “The Irishman,” from legendary director Martin Scorsese was released in the local box office on Nov. 20 before it became available on Netflix on Nov. 27. Based on one of America’s most famous unsolved mysteries, the disappearance of labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa, the film is a gloomy and dark look at 20th century American politics and society. Coming in at 209 minutes long, many critics said that the film was too long to watch on a small screen, and that the only way to watch it properly would be in theaters.

When the 2018 Oscar-nominated Netflix film “Roma” was released in Korea last fall, it was only screened at independent theaters for two days before it arrived on the streaming service.

Local movie theater company Megabox became the first Korean cinema chain to screen a Netflix-produced film this year when it showed “The King,” starring Timothee Chalamet, beginning on Oct. 23. The film was released on Netflix on Nov. 1 - 10 days after it premiered in theaters.

The upcoming film “The Two Popes,” starring Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce, will arrive in movie theaters on Monday before it starts streaming on Dec. 20 - also 10 days after its theatrical release.

In the case of “The Irishman,” which had a limited North American theatrical release starting on Nov. 1, the holdback period was 26 days.

With a $159 million total production cost, a renowned director and a star-studded cast filled with Hollywood legends like Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, “The Irishman” immediately aroused much interest and whispers of anticipation throughout the film industry. It is seen as a likely candidate to be nominated for an Academy Award next year.

Netflix, which started in 1997, has been the leader of a new television- and movie-watching experience spreading across the world known as the over-the-top (OTT) market. The service really began to take off in 2013 after it launched its hit original series “House of Cards” spread, which led to a sharp increase of paid memberships. In the third quarter of 2019, more than 158 million people from 190 countries were paying for the service. In the first three quarters of this year, the company has made about $5.2 billion in profit, an 18.7 percent increase from last year.

The service began expanding into film in 2016 and has steadily increased the number of its original films being released in theaters as well. This year, a total of 30 Netflix films were released in the North American box office. Although some inside the company were initially worried that releasing its original content in theaters would harm the appeal of its paying members having exclusive rights to their streaming content, experts say that the key to attracting top Hollywood talent is through working with theaters. “If there are no storytellers, the service cannot be maintained,” said an insider of Netflix Korea, referring to the directors that Netflix has been working with. “There are demands from directors who want their work to be seen in cinemas, and we try, as best as we can, to fit their needs.”

What merely started as a streaming service, Netflix is now spending $15 billion annually on producing its own original content, all because the global OTT industry is rapidly expanding. Disney Plus, which was released in North America last month, attracted over 10 million subscribers on its first day, threatening the current domination that Netflix has on the market. Releasing over a 100 years’ worth of film and television programs from Disney, Marvel and Pixar, the service’s low $6.99 monthly fee is less than any of the subscription plans that Netflix provides. Apple released its streaming service Apple TV Plus in 100 countries on Nov. 1, which costs $4.99 a month. More contenders are expected to arrive soon, with broadcasters such as HBO and NBC Universal expected to launch their own streaming services HBO Max and Peacock in the first half of 2020.

To combat the upcoming competition, Netflix is actively promoting partnerships with local broadcasters around the world, including in Korea.

On Nov. 25, JTBC Content Hub, an affiliate of local television channel JTBC, signed a contract with the streaming service to distribute the channel’s main drama series on the service, as well as co-producing original content. Moreover, CJ ENM subsidiary Studio Dragon signed a three-year partnership to create Korean original content together with Netflix.

“We have invested in over 180 different original content projects in Asia alone,” said Netflix CEO Reed Hastings when he visited Korea for the Korea-Asean special summit in Busan on Nov. 25. “Netflix plans to further cooperation with Korean content providers.”
