Restaurants get some help translating their menus
The Korea Tourism Organization has created a separate website for food and restaurant information. Through the Food Trip in Korea website, restaurant owners can submit their menus in Korean and receive automatic translation services, as well as menu design recommendations.
Currently about 8,500 dishes are registered on the website for automatic translation. Since some restaurant owners have difficulties making their menus appealing to trendy foodies coming to town, the agency also provides tools to make a printed menu easy to read with the use of QR codes if necessary.
The automatic translation service is available for English, Japanese and Chinese. The files are provided to those who use the service so that restaurateurs can print out menus without too much hassle.
The Korea Tourism Organization promoted the website by providing hard copies of menus to restaurants that used the service until last week.
More participation from local restaurant owners is key, as the information they put in will be used as part of the travel organization’s database.
Beginning January, extensive information about the dishes these restaurants offer will also be posted on the website in order to help international visitors who are unfamiliar with what to try during their stay.
The agency plans to attach a list of restaurants where visitors can find particular dishes that they find appealing from pictures on the website, making all food-related information easily accessible.
