Moon, Abe talk in 15 months

The leaders of Korea and Japan returned to top-level diplomacy Tuesday, but disagreement over a key issue from the countries’ bitter past remains unresolved.

한일 정상들이 화요일 최고위급 외교로 되돌아 갔으나, 양국간의 아픈 과거와 관련된 중요 문제에 대한 의견차이를 해소하지는 못했다.

President Moon Jae-in and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe held a 45-minute meeting Tuesday afternoon, their first bilateral summit in 15 months. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Korea-China-Japan trilateral summit in Chengdu, the capital city of China’s Sichuan Province.

문재인 한국 대통령과 아베 신조 일본 총리는 화요일 오후 15개월 만에 처음으로 만나 45분 동안 정상회담을 했다. 한일 정상회담은 중국 쓰촨성 청두에서 열린 한중일 삼국 정상회담과는 별도로 열렸다.

Moon and Abe stressed their intentions to have a “candid” dialogue before the summit, and their hopes to repair deeply strained ties.

문 대통령과 아베 총리는 정상회담 모두 발언에서 “솔직하게” 대화하겠다는 의도를 강조했고, 심각하게 경색된 관계를 회복하고 싶다는 희망을 피력했다.

“For the two countries to resolve pending issues, a face-to-face meeting and a candid dialogue are the most powerful means,” Moon said in opening remarks for the summit. “I hope we can exchange our opinions candidly today,” Abe also responded.

문 대통령은 모두 발언에서 “양국 현안 문제들을 해결하기 위해서는 마주보고 앉아 솔직하게 대화하는 게 가장 효과적인 방법”이라고 말했다. 아베 총리는 “오늘 우리가 솔직하게 의견을 교환할 수 있기를 희망한다”고 말했다.

After the talks, Abe’s office said the mood was very tense but not hostile. It said the two leaders had a very candid and frank dialogue. “The largest significance is that Abe and Moon sat down for a face-to-face meeting, had a frank exchange of opinions and agreed to continue dialogue,” it said.

회담이 끝난 후 아베 총리실은 회담 분위기는 상당히 긴장된 상태였지만 적대적이진 않았다고 말했다. 총리실은 양국 정상들은 매우 진솔하게 대화했다고 말했다. 총리실은 “아베 총리와 문 대통령이 마주 앉아 솔직하게 의견을 교환했고 계속 대화하는데 합의했다는 것이 가장 중요하다”고 말했다.

The two sides failed to narrow down their differences on outstanding and interlinked issues - compensation for forced laborers during World War II and a serious trade row.

양국은 서로 얽혀있는 강제징용자 배상과 무역갈등 현안에 대한 의견차이를 좁히지는 못했다.
