The Gwangju Metropolitan Government will be funding the productions of films related to the Gwangju uprising to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the movement, according to the government on Tuesday.

Along with the Gwangju Information and Culture Industry Promotion Agency, the city will fund 11 selected film productions - three feature films and eight short films - with a total of 1.2 billion won ($1 million).

The genres of the films will vary accordingly, from commercial films to documentaries and musicals.

One film that many peek public interest is a feature film titled “Vengeful Ridge” (literal translation) by director Lee Jung-gook, which is about an ex-soldier from Republic of Korea Army Special Warfare Command (ROK-SWC) suffering from the guilt of his past deeds wanting to redeem himself through taking revenge on a victim from the uprising. A veteran cast of Ahn Sung-ki, Yoon Yoo-sun, and Park Geun-hyung feature in the film.

Eight short films will introduce different perspectives of the movement by directors active in cities such as Seoul; Changwon, South Gyeongsang; Jeonju, North Jeolla; and Chuncheon, Gangwon.
