The home of late composer Cho Kwang-hwan, more popularly known as Na Hwa-rang, in the North Gyeongsang city of Gimcheon has been registered as a national cultural heritage site, the Cultural Heritage Administration announced on Monday.

“Composer Cho was a figure that represented musicians and composers in Korea shortly following its independence,” the administration said in its statement Monday. “His home is among very few existing homes of musicians and composers of his time and deserves preservation and study.”

This marks the first time that a musician or a composer’s birthplace has been registered as a heritage site in Korea.

Cho, born in 1921, learned to play violin in Japan. He debuted as a singer in 1942 and the next year started composing music at the recommendation of his older brother, Cho Kyung-hwan, who was composing music and writing lyrics for pop music at the time.

Na Hwa-rang (Cho Kwang-hwan)

Cho Kwang-hwan was known for incorporating mambo into Korean music in the 1950s and rose to fame when Lee Mi-ja released “Love at 19” in 1959, which he wrote.

The composer’s songs include “Samgaksan Guests,” “Doraji Mambo” and “Milestone.” He wrote around 600 songs before he died in 1983.

Cho married singer Yoo Seong-hee and had three sons - Cho Kyu-cheon, Kyu-man and Kyu-chan - all of whom performed as singers in the 1990s. Kyu-chan debuted first among the brothers in 1989 after winning the gold prize at the first Yoo Jae Ha Music Concours. All of Cho’s sons were known for their music composition and editing skills. The trio produced their first album “Cho Trio” in 1998.

The Cultural Heritage Administration said that the owner of Cho’s birthplace first approached the administration regarding the possibility of having it registered as a national cultural heritage site.

Other sites registered along with Cho’s house on Monday were a tourist hotel in Gwangju that dates back to post-Korean War (1950-53) era and is the only surviving government-built hotel dating back to this time, and a historical street in Tongyeong, South Gyeongsang, that provides a glimpse at life following Korea’s independence from Japan’s colonization (1910-1945).
