Korea is set to dismantle the decommissioned Kori-1 nuclear reactor next year, the Industry Ministry said Friday.
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) has submitted a final bid for a nuclear power plant construction project in the Czech Republic. The state-run utility is competing with Westinghouse and EDF.
Westinghouse said Wednesday that it will appeal the U.S. court’s latest decision to dismiss its lawsuit against state-owned Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) and its parent company Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco).
The delayed commissioning of Shin-Hanul nuclear reactors Unit 1 and 2 caused over 9 trillion won ($6.79 billion) of loss by forcing the country to source electricity from liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead, recent data analysis showed.
The 1,400-megawatt Shin-Hanul Unit 2 reactor, which began construction in 2010, was granted final approval for operation from the Nuclear Safety And Security Commission on Thursday.
Doosan Enerbility began manufacturing core components for Shin-Hanul 3 and 4 nuclear reactors Monday, after the company signed a 2.9 trillion won ($2.2 billion) supply deal with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) in March.
Doosan Enerbility will supply core materials for a small modular reactor (SMR) project in the U.S., the company said Friday.
It would be a win-win strategy if Korea and the U.S. cooperate in global reactor expansion. The Poland deal should come to fruition to help revive the struggling local industry.
The much-delayed Shin-Hanul No. 1 is being further delayed. It will be switched on six months later than planned.
“Nuclear power plants should be fully utilized as a main source of electricity for the next 60 years,” said Moon during a meeting on the global energy supply at the Blue House on Feb. 25.
