The Pohang Steelers secured their sixth Korea Cup title, ending a challenging 2024 season on a high note and qualifying for the 2025-26 AFC Champions League Two.
Pohang Steelers defeated their regional rivals Ulsan HD FC 3-1 for their second consecutive title at the top national football tournament on Saturday.
The first legs of the 2024 Korea Cup semifinals ended Wednesday with K League 1 defending champions Ulsan HD beating Gwangju 1-0 and reigning Korea Cup champions Pohang Steelers drawing 2-2 with Jeju United.
K League 1 clubs Ulsan HD, Gwangju FC, Jeju United and defending Korea Cup champions Pohang Steelers are through to this year's top four.
It was a night of near-upsets across the country, as nearly every team in the second division was at one point in the lead against top-tier opponents — including Gyeongnam FC's bout against Ulsan HD with the K League 2 side one man down.
The third round of the 2024 Korea Cup — the newly-renamed FA Cup — finished Wednesday with K League 1 sides Suwon FC and Daegu FC crashing out of the competition early.
