President Kim Makes State Visit to Japan

President Kim Dae Jung and his wife Lee Hee Ho make a four day state visit to Japan on October 7.
President Kim will make a courtesy call to Japanese Emperor Akihito and participate in a dinner hosted by the Emperor on October 7.
On his second day in Japan (Oct.8), President Kim will hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and discuss how to find ways the two countries can cooperate in a 'national partnership'.
After the summit meeting, President Kim and Japanese Prime Minister will announce a 'Communique For The New Korean-Japanese Partnership Toward the 21st Century' during a joint press conference. Korean Foreign Minister Hong Soon Young and his Japanese counterpart Masahiko Komura will follow this communique with an 'Implementation Program' which will outline the details. Japanese Prime Minister Obuchi will be the first Japanese Prime Minister to stipulate Japan's reflection and apology for past wrongdoings in the preamble of the communique, and President Kim will both acknowledge and show appreciation for this gesture.
On the basis of this mutual understanding, President Kim and Prime Minister Obuchi will announce guidelines of mutual cooperation in five specific sectors including the enlargement of dialogue channels between the two sides and economic cooperation.
President Kim will participate in both a luncheon meeting hosted by business leaders and a dinner by Prime Minister on October 8, and meet with Korean residents in Osaka on October 9 before he returns to Korea on October 10.
