U.S. Military Smuggling Increasing

Oct 13,1998
Smuggling through U.S. military PXs and U.S. military post offices has increased at 3 times the amount while cases have decreased 30% in the last 3 years.
Numbers were supplied by the National Policy Audit by the National Assembly in 1998, and publicly disclosed by assemblyman Chung Woo Taek. They reveal that smuggling proceeds totaled 380,000 dollars with 117 cases tried in 1996, but tripled to 1.1 million dollars and 81 cases in 1997.
According to the audit, liquor and electronic goods were mainly smuggled through PXs, and the drug viagra and golf clubs came through U.S. military post office deliveries.
The total amount of known black market operations in Korea was 6 million dollars as of September this year, which is a lot more than that of the 900,000 dollars reported in 1996.
