Gov"t to Pay 333 Million Dollars to USFK in 1999

The United States and Korea, on December 22, reached an agreement on the amount Korea will pay for maintaining U.S. military forces in Korea. Korea will pay 333 million dollars of support to the U.S., a slight increase over 1997's bill of 314 million dollars.
Kim In Jong, a high ranking official of the Ministry of National Defense (MOND) said, 'We will actually pay 290 million dollars because 40 million dollars will be delivered in 2000.'
During more than 10 rounds of negotiations at the staff level, the U.S. demanded 440 million dollars to account for rising inflation but Korea asked the U.S. to consider the current economic crisis.
Personnel expenses accounted for 213 billion won, the most among all categories, followed by military construction (80 million dollars), combined defense force augmentation (40 million dollars), and military logistics (44.5 billion won and 21 million dollars)
The money for personnel expenses will be paid in Korean won and that for military construction and augmentation will be paid in dollars.
