28 to be Arrested at Chogye Temple Incident
The police plan to detain 26 monks and two followers among the 77 arrested on December 23. Kim Yong Hwa, a high ranking policeman said, 'The 28 were captured on camera throwing stones and bottles. We plan to investigate their involvement with other criminal organizations.'The police revealed that 50 of 58 monks arrested are former convicts with six of them having more than 10 convictions. One man has 12 convictions on his record.
The convictions include various kinds of crimes including assault, theft, embezzlement, and robbery. Even rape and one charge of a man assaulting his own father are also included.
A police source said, 'We have yet to discover fake monks or organizational gangsters among them. Considering that plenty of monks have convictions, we are performing thorough identification on all of them.'
