Korean Ship Makers Claim Top 3 Spots in World Ranking

The three major Korean ship builders, Hyundai, Daewoo, and Samsung recorded No. 1 to 3 in production by weight in the world.
This year, the three companies avoided any labor disputes and operated their facilities at 100 percent: this allowed them to increase productivity from 10 to 15 percent.
The scale of Hyundai's ship building is expected to grow by 10 percent from 2.51 million tons to 2.8 million tons. Daewoo's volume is forecasted to rise by 15 percent to 2.2 million tons and Samsung predicts it will increase capacity by 15 percent from 1.56 million tons to 1.8 million tons.
Mitsubishi, Japan's largest ship maker, was ranked fourth but its scale is expected to decrease by 35 percent from 1.42 million tons to 920,000 tons.
A ship building expert said, 'The total quantity of Korean-built ships grew by 10 to 15 percent while the Japanese increased by only 0.1 percent.'
