Unusual Winter Weather Continues
The yellow dust phenomenon, 'hwang sa', in which sand from deserts in China mixes with other pollutants and crosses over in air masses to Korea, is an unusual sight in Korea in winter. The national meteorological observatory said on January 25, 'The dust swirl originated in Mongolia and gathered steam in northern China before moving into the central part of the Korean Peninsula.
'Generally this kind of dusty wind comes in March and April but the dry, warm winter weather we are experiencing with abnormally low precipitation brought the naturally-occurring phenomenon earlier.'
The dust consists of silicone, aluminium, copper, cadmium and lead and along with making the sky brown it can pose a serious problem for asthma sufferers and cause eye diseases.
