Foreign Workers Still Needed Despite Soaring Unemployment

Daewoo Motors' factory for its new model, the Matiz, needed domestic workers for simple assembly-line positions last month but failed to fill the jobs.
Daewoo was forced to broaden its search, and eventually hired three Indonesian two weeks ago. It plans on adding seven more in two weeks.
The owner of this company, Cho Hyong Chul, commented, 'As consumers started buying light cars under the current economic recession, demand increased, but domestic laborors are still discontent taking those jobs so I decided to use foreigners.'
Although the national unemployment rate is nearing 2 million, Southeast Asians are rather increasing due to Koreans' high expectations on job standards.
Korea's work ethic has changed due to decades of prosperity even youngsters no longer want to do manual labor. Moreover, foreign workers are guaranteed to serve at least two to three years under contract because of the potential to save large amounts of money compared to working in their home countries.
