KT to Suspend Phone Service

Korea Telecom(KT) announced on February 19 that it will not provide phone service from midnight to 6 a.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays in selected areas according to a schedule for districts throughout the country starting from February 21 through to August 29th.
KT explained that the disruption of service is necessary for the process of changing some computers in order to remedy the Y2K problem.
Accordingly, each of the 111 designated districts thoughout the nation, in turn, will have their phones basically cut off for one six-hour period.
However, KT will maintain emergency-call services in the disconnected area, so citizens can still reach police, fire and amubulance departments by pushing 119. The government-owned KT will notify customers when their particular district will be disconnected.
