Ruling Party Stresses Political Solution

Lee Man-sup, acting president of the ruling National Congress for New Politics (NCNP), stated Sunday that he will seek a political solution on handling opposition Grand National Party (GNP) Assemblyman Chung Hyung-keun who drew the ire of the government for severely criticizing President Kim Dae-jung during a rally in Pusan.
Lee appeared on a KBS-TV discussion program Sunday and hinted that a political compromise is in the works.
The NCNP has reportedly decided that they would drop the lawsuit they launched against Chung for defamation if he goes to the prosecution in person for questioning and apologizes to President Kim.
Regarding the proposed amendment of the country's electoral districts, Lee emphasized that no attempt to unilaterally pass the multi-constituency system will be carried out without the GNP.
Lee also commented on the 'Press Coercion Document', stating that NCNP Vice-President Lee Jong-chan should participate in the national audit to resolve any suspicions on his involvement with the document or subsequent actions against JoongAng Ilbo newspaper.
