Pupyong Candidate Stirs up Controversy over Sale of Daewoo Motors
The national assembly election in Pupyong is heating up over the candidate's stance over the sale of Daewoo Motors. All four candidates running for seats in the area oppose the disposal of Daewoo Motors by selling it to a foreign automobile manufacturer. Employees of Daewoo Motors, most of whom dwell in Pupyong, recently went on strike, insisting on the nationalization of their company instead of disposal by sale abroad.Candidates are very sensitive to this matter because 80 percent of the Bupyeong economy is closely related to Daewoo Motors, so it will decisively effect the election result. The two incumbents, Cho Jin-hyeong from the Grand National Party (GNP) and Park Sang-gyu from the Millenium National Party (MNP) are engaged in war of words over this matter.
Civil groups and the labor community are strongly against the sale of Daewoo Motors and are threatening to voice their displeasure at the polls.
