Science Day with the Citizens

Apr 25,2000
At 5:00pm on April 21, the Science Day, some citizens came together at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). It was for the meeting of citizens of Taejon and scientists in the Taedock Science Town located in Taejon.

At first, there was an awkward silence due to the unfamiliarity between the citizens and the scientists. Mr. Chung, a 44-year-old pharmacist, whose idea it was to hold the meeting, proposed a toast, saying "This is the first party for the scientists in the Taedock Science Town to be held by the citizens of Taejon."

The meeting was held by natives of Taejon in their forties including Mr.Chung. They have lived in Taejon for a long time, but their lives are far from science or the science town located in their city. Accordingly, they hoped to unite the local community and the science town in order to develop the region.

Such hopes of the citizens were answered by the scientists. Doctor Ryu in The Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), the person in charge of the launch of the Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite Arirang-1, volunteered a special lecture for the citizens. He explained the process from production to launch of the satellite and stories behind the development. He said, "As a researcher, this is the first time that I have met the citizens of this community."
Citizens and scientists discussed diverse subjects until late in the evening. A citizen residing near the science town said that it is the first time he visited KAIST. Everybody there could feel the true meaning of science popularization.
