A Staged Story of Loss

Sept 18,2000
Ever complained about films always telling a story about "heroic" men?
If yes, you might be better off seeing the new play titled "The Beautiful Distance," and starring Korea's two veteran stage actors Choi Jong-won and Jung Jin-kak.

Written by Lee Man-hee, who created the controversial drama "Please Turn Off the Light," the new play depicts a story of love and friendship between two men in their 50's who have painful memories of their own. Having been bankrupt and experienced divorce, the two high school buddies, Min and Ahn, make a living as a taxi driver and an owner of a photo studio. To pay back their monstrous debt they borrow a loan in the amount of 5000 won per day from the bank.

The title "The Beautiful Distance" refers to the emotional gap that exists between human beings, and it embeds the playwright's philosophy that "all men are meant to be alone." In the title, Lee also implies that such pre-destined gaps between human relationships can be overcome with love and endeavor.

The story provides humor and the warm wisdom of the alienated groups in our society.

The play continues until October 29.
