Seoul Says It Rues Japanese Remarks

The foreign ministry Monday issued a statement of regret following remarks by a Japanese budget official that World War II in the Pacific ended colonialism and some heads of state credit their independence to Japan.

"We regret that Hosei Norota, chief of the Diet's budget committee, justified the Pacific War with his distorted remarks that dismissed the pain of neighboring countries," the statement said. "Such remarks go against the times and are not advisable, not only for Japan's friendly relations with other countries but for Japan itself."

At a speech in Akita prefecture, Mr. Norota referred to the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere," and said, "If one travels to Southeast Asia, many people say they gained independence thanks to Japan."
