Kim Is Considering Choice for UN Post

With South Korea likely to become the chair of the 56th United Nations General Assembly in September, the government is considering whom to nominate as presiding officer.

"We have nearly completed our selection for the chairman candidate," a government official said. "The only thing left at this stage is the final approval from President Kim Dae-jung."

Lee Hong-koo, former prime minister and former ambassador to the United States, Han Sung-joo, former foreign minister, Yoo Chong-ha, former foreign minister and Lee See-young, former United Nations ambassador, have emerged as strongest candidates.

The chairman of the General Assembly, which represents 189 UN member countries, has high international visibility during his one-year tenure.
