A Few More Coins for Noodles
The price of ramen, beloved of students and harried housewives, is set to rise for the first time since 1998, as a main producer of the instant noodles, Nong Shim Co. Ltd, said Wednesday it would hike prices by about 9 percent. Other makers are expected to follow suit.Nong Shim's 17 quick-noodle products will be 8.7 percent more expensive on average, effective Monday. "We are raising prices because of changes in foreign exchange rates and higher costs," a source from Nong Shim said. The price of one of its most popular products, "Shin Ramen," will rise from 450 won (34 cents) to 480 won. The company began selling Shin Ramen at 200 won in 1986.
Ramen prices have risen only moderately compared with other basic food products, according to the National Statistical Agency.
