Hwang Visit to U.S. Stirs Ire From North

North Korea warned that if Hwang Jang-yop, the highest ranking North Korean defector to the South, were to visit Washington, it would chill relations between the United States and Pyongyang.

"Such an anti-D.P.R.K. burlesque to be orchestrated by some hard-line conservative Republican congressmen is part of the foolish moves to give a shot in the arm of the U.S. administration in its pursuance of the anti-D.P.R.K. hard-line policy and isolate and stifle the D.P.R.K. at any cost," a Foreign Ministry spokesman said Saturday on the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

The initials stand for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's formal name.

The official emphasized that the visit would "compel the D.P.R.K. to take an appropriate countermeasure."
