China to Give Food, Energy Aid to North

Chinese President Jiang Zemin is expected to announce several million dollars worth of food and energy aid when he visits North Korea in early September, a high-ranking South Korean government official said.

"Mr. Jiang will extend corn, flour and petroleum aid to the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-il. There will be no rice aid, though," he said.

"The two leaders will also discuss the status of U.S. forces in South Korea, which may well be included in the joint statement they announce," the official said on condition of anonymity.

The official said that Mr. Jiang initially expected to visit the North in late September, but advanced the date due to a series of domestic events. The Chinese Communist Party's plenum will meet in mid-September and October 1 is Founding Day.
