North on schedule on rail, road links

North Korea has completed 30 percent of its mine removal project inside the Demilitarized Zone to relink two cross-border railroads, Seoul's National Defense Ministry said Thursday. The North announced its progress at military talks Thursday.

The North also informed the South that it had built 4.4 kilometers of the 8.6-kilometer road link between the DMZ and the North's Mount Geumgang resort. The road will be used for overland tours to the area.

The two Koreas have agreed to complete two railroads links, on the east and west coasts by early next year. The progress report from North Korea suggests that it is on schedule to meet that deadline.
