Gyeonggi wants help with military issues

The Gyeonggi provincial government said yesterday it wants to set up new offices to handle what it said is an increasing number of complaints about the large number of military bases -- both U.S. and Korean -- it hosts. The new offices would be established in Uijeongbu, Paju, Dongducheon, Yeoncheon and Pocheon in the northern part of the province where the military presence is heavy.

Seoul asked the national government to authorize the establishment of departments that would handle matters related to both the Republic of Korea and the U.S. military stationed in its jurisdiction.

The problem is not just one with U.S. forces, the provincial government said; there are also more than 200,000 Korean troops assigned there.

Provincial officials said were lobbying the Ministry of Home Affairs to support the new offices.
